DESCRIPTION

First, it's better to grip the bar with a narrow grip (10-15 cm). Second, the effect of the exercise depends on how high you lift your elbows rather than the bar itself. It's sufficient to lift the bar to the level of your collarbones. Focus more on your elbows. For some individuals, this exercise may cause discomfort in the shoulders, in which case it’s better to refrain from it.

Nuances and mistakes

1. The barbell shrug is also known as the "barbell row to the chin." Please do not confuse it with the Olympic weightlifting shrug, which can be performed as a snatch or clean and jerk.

2. You should pull the bar as close to your body as possible, maintaining a straight trajectory rather than a curved path.

3. There are many debates regarding the grip width. Personally, I prefer a narrow grip because it offers a greater range of motion, and the trapezius muscles work effectively at both ends of the trajectory.

4. The main focus should not be on lifting the bar as high as possible, but rather on raising the elbows. The higher the elbows are in relation to the barbell, the better the anterior deltoids engage.

5. Choose a weight that allows you to perform at least 8 repetitions. For the last few repetitions, you may use your back and legs for assistance, but don’t overdo the cheating. Your goal is to target your shoulders, not your entire body.

6. My personal experience and observations have shown me that the shrug is not as effective of an exercise as it may seem. Therefore, I use it quite rarely in my coaching practice.
