LOAD ON MUSCLES
DESCRIPTION

This exercise differs from the similar barbell exercise in that the dumbbells, and thus the weight, are positioned on the sides rather than in front. Some athletes may find this more comfortable. I recommend not only lifting your shoulders upward but also pulling them back. This allows for a more comprehensive engagement of the trapezius muscles.

Nuances and mistakes

1. The main difference between this exercise and its barbell counterpart is that the dumbbells are positioned at the sides of the body. This means the weight is evenly distributed across the trapezius muscles. I wouldn't say this is bad or good; it simply feels different.

2. If the weight of the dumbbells is quite heavy, I recommend using straps to avoid being distracted by your grip.

3. If you slightly tilt your back, the load will shift from the upper trapezius to its lower fibers. The more you lean your torso, the lower the load shifts.

4. It is preferable to work through the full range of motion, fully relaxing the muscles at the bottom and pausing for a moment at the top.

5. Trapezius exercises can be performed at the end of a back or shoulder workout, as many shoulder exercises also engage the trapezius.

6. Try to avoid bending your arms at the elbows. In this case, your arms should act merely as ropes connecting your shoulders to the dumbbells.
