DESCRIPTION

This is an equivalent exercise to the deadlift, but with dumbbells. The advantage is that the dumbbells can be positioned on the sides of your legs, thereby aligning your center of gravity with the weights. It's an excellent exercise for beginners (although it can be challenging to teach some people) and for women.

Nuances and Mistakes

1. Unlike the barbell, the dumbbell deadlift allows you to position the weights beside your body, which is more comfortable for the joints. Additionally, you can bend lower (if flexibility allows) and thereby increase the range of motion.

2. Your back should maintain an arch in the lower back. If you cannot bend fully down without rounding your back, then either don’t bend as low or bend your legs more. You should aim to straighten fully.

3. The more you bend your legs, the more the glutes will work. The less you bend, the more the hamstrings will be engaged. However, remember that your legs should not be completely straight, or the hamstrings will be excessively loaded. But you also shouldn't bend your legs too much, as that will turn the deadlift into a squat. The maximum bend in your legs should have your thighs parallel to the floor at the lowest point.

4. The dumbbell deadlift is great for beginners and women. This exercise is easier to master than the barbell version. It effectively targets the hamstrings and glutes.

5. To better feel your glutes, I recommend doing another basic exercise for the glutes before this deadlift. For example, dumbbell lunges or deep squats with a barbell on your shoulders.

6. If you experience lower back pain, either avoid this exercise altogether or perform three sets of hyperextensions beforehand. Additionally, good preliminary warm-up and stretching of the working joints are necessary in any case.
