The problem with strength training is that there comes a moment when doing the same thing can get a bit tedious. The same exercises, even if you change them periodically; the same environment; monotonous work with weights or your own body weight.

All of this leads to fatigue of the nervous system: you start to notice that your motivation to train isn't as high as it was in the beginning.

In short, variety in training will help eliminate this fatigue and monotony. Therefore, here is a top list of unconventional leg exercises, and by the link is an open Telegram channel with various useful tips for anyone training.

Toe Raise Squats

An awesome way to work out the muscles of the front thighs, glutes, and calves. To achieve a more comprehensive muscle workout, you can perform the exercise with both a wide and a narrow stance. With a wide stance, you can also target the inner thighs and slightly engage the hamstrings.

An advanced variant of toe raise squats is the skier squat with a toe raise.

This variation also includes the back extensors (lower back muscles) in addition to the previously mentioned muscle groups.

Twisting Squats

After performing a squat, bring together the opposite elbow and knee, which results in trunk rotation. This effectively works the leg muscles (quadriceps, glutes) as well as the sides (oblique abdominal muscles). It’s perfect for toning the waist and legs.

Hip Raise Squats

As expected, both the legs and core are engaged. The rectus abdominis, along with the thigh muscles, is responsible for bringing the knee to the chest. Therefore, you can work your abs and legs at the same time.

Side Steps with Squats

This exercise effectively works the major muscle groups (quadriceps and glutes) and also targets the muscles responsible for lateral leg movements (outer thigh). You can perform it either in place (one step right, one step left) or moving (several steps in one direction and back).

Circular Leg Movements on All Fours

Everyone is used to simply lifting their leg up and down, thus targeting the glutes. However, you can achieve more significant work and load by performing circular movements (also due to a slight stretch of the working muscle).

Circular Leg Movements on the Side

If you need to work the gluteus medius and minimus, as well as the muscles that abduct the legs (outer thigh), then this exercise is suitable. Unlike simple leg raises, rotation engages the working muscles much more effectively.

Hip Adduction While Lying on the Side

This allows you to target the adductor muscles of the legs (inner thigh) without leaving the comfort of the mat. Despite the simplicity of the movement, the load is sufficient for you to feel the targeted muscles.

Skater Jumps

This exercise, due to the alternating leg work and unconventional movement amplitude, engages almost all sides of the leg muscles: outer, inner, front, and even a bit of the posterior thigh.

Standing Reach on One Leg

Apart from the working muscles of the standing leg, the stabilizing muscles responsible for balance are significantly engaged. This exercise is great for wrapping up a leg workout.

These exercises can be seamlessly integrated into your training program (if you already have one). No program? Then you can find free complexes for different goals here. Check it out.

And as usual, I recommend paying attention to our nutrition plan if you're struggling to lose weight or, conversely, gain weight.

All of the above exercises are bodyweight exercises (although you can use small dumbbells to increase the load). But if you're looking for exercises with additional weight, check out these articles:
