The latissimus dorsi muscles are among the largest muscles in the human body. They make the back wide and contribute to good posture and overall back aesthetics. In this article, I want to talk specifically about training these muscles.

The primary exercises for training the lats are, of course, pull-ups. If you want your back to be truly wide, you must include pull-ups in your routine. There are several variations:

This exercise maximally loads your latissimus dorsi muscles. Next is the pull-up to the chest with a medium grip. Here, you should try to arch your back as much as possible at the top position and slightly move your legs forward. The more your torso leans away from vertical, the more the lat muscles will be engaged.

    Another good method is:

In this variation, to avoid hitting your head on the bar, you have to arch your back, which adds extra load to your back.

Now let's talk about rows. Presenting:

Here, there are two options: overhand grip and underhand grip. Both are valid, but in my opinion, the underhand grip is preferable. The reason is that with this grip, the elbows stay closer to the torso, which makes the lats contract more significantly, thus increasing the exercise's effectiveness. It's better to grip a bit wider than shoulder-width. A very wide grip reduces the range of motion and hinders the back muscles from working effectively.

As a variation of this exercise, you can consider:

This is a very useful exercise (especially if you know how to do it). The fixed pelvic position offers fewer opportunities for cheating. For better stretching of the lats, it’s better to rotate the wrist with the palm facing back at the bottom of the movement. For better contraction, rotate the wrist with the palm facing you at the top and squeeze the elbow towards your body.

This makes the load on the back even more isolated and rightfully can be considered one of the most effective exercises for your lats.

            And of course -

Even though this exercise may not significantly pump up your back, it is worth doing. The pullover effectively stretches both the lats and the entire shoulder girdle, as well as the chest. It's best to perform it at the end of your workout.

Here are a couple more tips. First, don't be afraid to use straps in exercises for the lats. This will reduce the load on your arms and make your back work as effectively as possible. Secondly, in all exercises, it’s advisable to arch your back at the peak of the effort and squeeze the shoulder blades together, while at the end of lowering the weight, round your back slightly. This technique will cause your muscles to contract and stretch more effectively.

Exercises for the latissimus dorsi muscles boast variety and options like no other. I'll try to provide some recommendations on how to combine all of this.

Your training plan should definitely include both vertical pulls/pull-ups and horizontal rows. Only this way will your back development be comprehensive. For example: Monday:
