What are negative calorie foods?
Author: Tkachenko Sergey - Master of sport in bodybuilding. All articles by the author ➤
Products with a negative caloric index are those that have a low glycemic index and low caloric content. Generally, the longer a product takes to digest, the lower its glycemic index. This results in the body expending more calories on digestion than it receives from these foods. Hence the term – negative caloric content. Low glycemic index foods are mainly found in vegetables, nuts, meat, and fruits, while high glycemic index foods include processed foods, dried fruits, sugar, and confectionery products. What benefits do such products (with a negative caloric index) provide us? If you maintain a certain caloric intake and lead an active lifestyle, this combination will allow you to stay in shape. Additionally, natural foods are always better than processed foods and other denatured waste. However, caution is still necessary with natural foods, especially if you have gastritis, ulcers, or other gastrointestinal issues – you may need a special diet. Products with a negative caloric index (low GI)
These products have a low glycemic index. Foods like meat, eggs, and legumes, along with nuts, all have low GIs, so there's no need to list them individually. The second list contains foods with a glycemic index slightly higher than the first. They have a medium index. In terms of calories, these foods do not exceed those listed above, but since they contain fructose, they are absorbed a bit faster. Products with a negative caloric index (medium GI)
These two lists are not exhaustive. Listing all would take too long; I've only provided the most common examples. In a diet, it is essential to monitor caloric intake, as this is the main criterion. Foods with low caloric content are not necessarily those with a negative caloric index. The key is the combination of factors, as mentioned above (caloric content + speed of digestion). It's worth noting the role of citrus fruits in the diet. Not everyone's gastrointestinal tract tolerates certain fruits well – such as apples, pears, and plums; they can cause bloating and discomfort. In contrast, oranges, pineapples, lemons, and kiwis do not cause these symptoms, and importantly, they are rich in vitamin C, which boosts immunity and prevents catabolic processes, crucial during a diet. Your diet should be varied; don’t eat monotonously with the same foods. Sources of calories should be changed. You can consume the same types of meat, but it is still advisable to alternate them because the protein and amino acid compositions of different sources vary. For example, I mostly have eggs in my diet, as they are my main protein source. Regarding meat, I consume beef, turkey, or rabbit. As for chicken, I do not eat it due to its taste, which I find unappealing. Only eating lean meat is not recommended. The body needs to obtain fatty acids of animal origin; pork can also be included in the diet. Regarding fish – it is one of the best sources of quality protein. I personally don't like fish (I’m quite picky), but if you don't have such issues, I highly recommend including it in your diet. Fish is generally rich in omega-3 fatty acids. While there are plant-based sources, it is better to consume fish, as animal-based foods are most valuable for our bodies.
