DMAA – this is the name given to the popular sports supplement "geranium extract". It is one of the most well-known training stimulants. Few people know that DMAA was originally created as a drug to alleviate nasal congestion symptoms. Later, it became clear that the component has good properties as an energy booster.

In Russia, this component has been known since 2013, when the first pre-workouts and fat burners containing it went on sale. Since then, the popularity of "geranium" has only grown. There are enthusiastic reviews about DMAA on consumer forums, with claims that it is "legal doping." Of course, there are also negative reviews.

In this article, we will discuss the effects of DMAA, what this component can be combined with, and what it should not be combined with. We will also cover what dosages are considered normal and what are considered high.

Is DMAA Legal in Russia?

Yes. It is legal. As of 2019, you can find pre-workouts online that have even received state registration certificates, confirming the safety of the products.

Products containing DMAA can be sold and purchased. However, an important point is that doping agencies banned this component long ago, back in 2010. Therefore, if you are a professional athlete, using geranium is prohibited.

What Effects Does Geranium Have?

Geranium extract:

  • helps burn fat
  • improves memory
  • helps train longer

It is important to realize that after stopping the use of the supplement, the effects it provides will disappear. If you felt lazy to train, and DMAA gave you energy and motivation, that laziness won't vanish after you stop taking it.

In recent years, DMAA has become popular not only among athletes. It is used by those who practice taking legal stimulants.

How is Geranium Labeled on the Label?

It varies. Here are the most common names:

  • 1,3-Dimethylamylamine
  • DMAA
  • DMAA Hcl
  • Methylhexamine
  • Methylhexanamine
  • Methylhexanamine Hcl
  • Geranium oil
  • 4-methylhexan-2-amine

And that's not all. There may be other labels. Do not confuse DMAA with DMAE and DHEA – these are all different components with different actions.

Is DMAA Extracted from the Plant, from Room Geranium?

In fact, no. Despite American sports nutrition manufacturers' attempts to prove in courts that DMAA is found in plants, the answer is no. What is added to sports supplements is synthesized in laboratories.

However, this does not mean that the product is unequivocally unsafe.

In this article, we call DMAA "geranium" because this name has taken root in Russia. "Geranium, geranium" – this is how many who have used this stimulant refer to the component.

What Doses Are Considered Normal?

In supplements, you can find different dosages of DMAA, ranging from 10-20 mg to 100 mg per serving.

On average, the range of dosages looks like this:

Low Dose Average Dose High Dose
5-20 mg/day 20-50 mg/day 50-100 mg/day

If you have DMAA with a dosage of 75 mg, take one capsule per day. It is better not to increase the dosage. If you have DMAA with a dosage of 50 mg, you can start with one capsule, then switch to two capsules per day (100 mg DMAA per day).

Women can take DMAA. There are no restrictions for use. However, please select the correct dosage.

We do not recommend purchasing geranium in powder form. If you do not have scales, it will be difficult for you to dose the supplement.

How Long Does the Effect Last?

When you take DMAA in liquid or capsule form, it takes about 8 minutes for it to enter your bloodstream. It acts in the body for an average of 8.5 hours. It takes about a day for the component to be completely eliminated from the body.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Of course, there can be side effects, and you should be aware of them.

DMAA may:

  • negatively affect the liver
  • increase heart rate and blood pressure
  • cause nausea or vomiting

Additionally, with prolonged use, as with many stimulants, dependence may develop. You may need to increase the dosage or take a break.

What Products with DMAA Are Currently Available?

  • Hell Labs DMAA (this product was previously called 2SN DMAA) – contains 75 mg of geranium per serving.
  • 2SN DMAA+Caffeine (contains 50 mg of geranium and 50 mg of anhydrous caffeine).
  • Hell Labs Popolam – contains DMAA, as well as stimulants similar to it (DMHA and AMP Citrate). They are rarely found together in pre-workouts.
  • Core Labs Hyper Power – a pre-workout with a powerful composition, containing DMAA and several other stimulants.
  • Red Labs Oxy Red – a fat burner that contains DMAA.

You can find other products containing DMAA on the market. Usually, they all contain this component and have the claimed effects.

What Can Geranium Be Combined With?

DMAA can be combined with other stimulants. However, you need to pay attention to the dosages. If you already have a high dosage of DMAA, do not overdo it — other stimulants should be in smaller dosages.

You can take DMAA alongside your regular sports supplements:

If your pre-workout contains DMAA, and you want to take another fat burner with DMAA — that is a bad idea. It is better to stick to just one.

On some forums, you will find various reviews about DMAA dosages and how people combine this component. One option is: DMAA + Phenibut. One of our clients took such a mix (it's called DMAABut) and spoke very highly of it. However, we do not recommend using this combination — the components have very different effects. DMAA is a stimulant, whereas phenibut has a sedative effect. This is not suitable for most people.

We hope the article was helpful. Please leave a comment on whether you have taken DMAA and how this component affected you.
