The use of Mildronate in sports

Mildronate is known not only among those who "pump iron." It is used in almost all sports because of its universal action. However, since January 1, 2016, mildronate has been included in the list of prohibited substances by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Now, this drug is officially considered a performance-enhancing substance.

The active ingredient of mildronate is meldonium (trimethylhydrazinium propionate). It was synthesized in the 1970s. Immediately, it gained widespread use in both medical practice and among athletes.

Properties

The property of this substance is such that it improves metabolism at the cellular level. It helps in the faster elimination of metabolic waste from the cells and enables quicker recovery of their energy resources. For athletes' muscles, this means accelerated recovery after physical exertion. Importantly, it does not matter whether the exertion was in strength training or endurance. Everything stated in this article applies equally to all sports. You recover faster, meaning you can be in better physical shape for the next training session and achieve better results.

Mildronate is available in capsules (for oral use) and ampoules (for intravenous injections). It has been proven that with injections, its effectiveness is almost twice that of oral use. This is understandable, as the active ingredient goes directly into the bloodstream.

Dosage

Capsules come in a volume of 0.25 g. Athletes are recommended to take between 0.5 to 2 g per day, with an average dosage of 1 g (4 capsules). As for ampoules, each contains 5 ml. For athletes, the recommendation is 5-10 ml per day.

Side Effects

It is best to take mildronate in the first half of the day, as some mild side effects may occur. Specifically:

  1. Tachycardia (increased heart rate),
  2. Hypertension (elevated blood pressure),
  3. As a result, light psychomotor agitation.

Personally, I experienced all these side effects when using mildronate intravenously, and they were absent with oral use. However, although I found it harder to fall asleep due to increased blood pressure, I would wake up more refreshed and need less time to sleep.

Effectiveness

When does it make sense to take it? I believe that its effects will be most pronounced if you train quite intensely, and you also have a demanding job. In general, you simply won’t have enough time to recover. Even if you eat and sleep adequately, your muscles may not have enough time to recover. In such cases, mildronate helps. I have undergone several courses of injecting this substance (a total of about 100 ampoules) and always observed an increased recovery speed. At one point, for a month, I worked every day on a construction site until evening and then went to train. During that entire time, I used mildronate intravenously. Overall, the drug works.

The recommended duration of use is 3-5 weeks (around a month), as over time, the body may develop resistance (insensitivity) to this substance. I will remind you once again that mildronate can help your muscles recover faster, but it will not replace proteins and carbohydrates. Therefore, if you do not eat enough, it will not save you from overtraining.
