What are peptides and their use in bodybuilding?

It's been about ten years since peptides have entered bodybuilding on a large scale. Prior to this, only IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor 1) was circulated among some of the top professionals. However, there was little information about this drug, and it was not available to the general public.

As the years went by, more and more drugs classified as peptides appeared on the market. However, the lack of clinical research, issues with accessibility, contradictory information, and the rapid pace at which new products were released left many bodybuilders with unanswered questions.

Of course, the use of the term "peptide" is partly responsible for this confusion. The general term "peptide" is somewhat ambiguous by nature, as it is used to describe a wide range of various compounds.

Unlike anabolic steroids, peptides do not represent a single class of drugs with a common effect. On the contrary, they encompass a diverse range of different compounds that promote various physiological responses. There are thousands of different peptides in the world, many of which have no legitimate application in bodybuilding.

Although our discussion is limited to peptides specifically used in bodybuilding, there are still about a dozen categories of drugs that have escaped our attention. I will explain why there is so much confusion surrounding this topic.

What are Peptides?

Peptides are chains of 50 or fewer amino acids linked by amide bonds. There are exceptions to this rule, however.

The concept of peptides is closely tied to proteins, with the only distinction being the number of amino acids in the chain. Often, these two terms are used interchangeably. For example, insulin is both a peptide and a protein. Peptides can have natural origins; they can be found in our daily food (like leucine peptides), or they can be synthetic drugs produced in a laboratory (such as IGF-1, LR3).

Most bodybuilders tend to view peptides as effective next-generation enhancers, although they have been used by athletes for over 30 years. The first were insulin and growth hormone. Undoubtedly effective, these two drugs, alongside steroids, form the foundation of most elite doping schemes today. Nevertheless, even before IGF-1 emerged, the term "peptide" was already well-known.

Some have declared them effective boosters, while others have mocked peptides, urging to stay away from them. Both sides have shown a lack of understanding of this topic. Such generalized conclusions are akin to statements that all drugs fall into either “good” or “bad” categories. It is clear that such responses will never be taken seriously. One must first understand the mechanism of action of a drug before expressing an opinion on its effectiveness. Peptides are no exception in this regard.

Peptides are used based on the goals and needs of the bodybuilder. Some have advantages over anabolic steroids, while others serve as a good supplement to steroids.

1. If your goal is muscle mass growth, you should remember that peptides are not a complete replacement for steroids. Additionally, you need to understand that steroids are the foundation of any successful doping regimen. It’s important for potential peptide users to understand what real results they can expect.

2. A significant advantage of peptides over AAS is that they have either minimal side effects (elevated prolactin, cortisol) or are completely safe. They also tend not to cause as much "rollback" in results after the cycle as steroids do.

3. Peptides like TB500 (Thymosin Beta 4) have an indirect effect on the performance and health of bodybuilders. TB500 is a natural peptide involved in tissue regeneration. One of its many functions is to increase collagen synthesis, reduce inflammation, and speed up wound healing overall.

When it comes to using steroids, the advantages can be more pronounced. Research has shown that testosterone (and other steroids) alone can reduce collagen production by up to 80%. In combination with repeated stresses from weight training, it is easy to understand why joint and ligament injuries are among the most common among bodybuilders.
