Very often, I receive questions regarding training and exercises for varicose veins. This issue affects many women and men as well. To be honest, until recently, I knew little about this topic. However, your numerous questions prompted me to study it in depth. After going through a fair amount of information and correlating it with my practical skills, I’ve come up with this article :) I want to clarify that this article is specifically about varicose veins in the legs, as this variant is the most commonly encountered. However, the principles described below are applicable to other parts of the body as well. I will also note that this article does not address severe cases of varicose veins that require surgical intervention. What is varicose? Varicose veins occur due to weak vessel walls and valves, meaning that the tone of the veins in the legs decreases, leading to their expansion. In these enlarged veins, blood flow velocity decreases, causing obstruction in both capillaries and larger vessels. I think the essence is clear. Thus, physical activities “train” the vessels, improving their tone. On the other hand, they also place additional stress on them. And your enlarged veins may become even wider. It’s a double-edged sword. It is undoubtedly necessary to train the legs with varicose veins. However, it is crucial to do this in a way that minimizes the load on the vessels. In general, you need to enjoy the benefits while being careful :) Let me explain how this can be done. Principles of Training with Varicose Veins in the Legs 1. The maximum load on the leg vessels occurs when you train standing. That is: And all other variations and analogs of these exercises. During these exercises, the pressure on the vessel walls in the legs increases significantly. It’s best to remove all of these exercises, at least for a while. However, again, it all depends on the stage of varicose veins. I believe that in the initial stages, you can keep a couple of such exercises and do them with light weights. 2. Train the leg muscles primarily lying down or sitting. This way, the pressure in the legs is much lower. The ideal option is when the legs are elevated above the torso. Exercises performed standing but without bending the knees are also suitable. Below is a list of such exercises: 3. The muscles of the upper body can be trained normally in the presence of varicose veins in the legs. There are no special recommendations in this case. 4. When it comes to cardio machines, it is better to train on a horizontal stationary bike or rowing machine. As you might have guessed, the load on the leg vessels will be lower than on a treadmill or elliptical trainer. 5. After your workout, it's advisable to lie down with your legs elevated for about 5 minutes. This will help reduce the blood filling the veins, thereby decreasing the load on the leg vessels. Conclusions Training the leg muscles with varicose veins is not only permissible but also necessary. Of course, almost all basic leg exercises are performed standing. However, I recommend eliminating these exercises (deadlifts, squats, and lunges) for at least 2-3 months. After that, you can try to reintroduce them into your workouts and see if things get worse or not. If you feel negative changes, you’ll have to forget about these exercises forever. Otherwise, you can gradually transition to full-fledged training. Good luck! SIMILAR ARTICLES
